shaded in the orange. that's until 8:00 tonight. what that means is temperatures are hot. they're in the 90s. and what makes it so special. you see the temperatures. we've seen those before, 95 in towson, 90 in moncton. when you factor in the humidity, that's what takes us into the unbelievable state. towson feels like 100. 107 in hock recall. feels like 98 in edgemere. that's what makes it so uncomfortable. this whole night is going to be warm and muggy. temperatures only falling to the mid-70s for overnight lows. we could see a couple isolated showers or thunderstorms. those are most likely to occur along the northern border of the mason dixon line. i'll tell you how long it's going to last, coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, susan. because of the hot weather, marc train riders can expect some delays. csx has issued heat orders for this afternoons a rush hour that could lead to delays of 5 to 15 minutes. whenever it gets hot like this,

trains operate slower than usual because the heat can cause the tracks to bend or the buckle. let's take a look at towson university. the heat is on there, but for different reasons. protesters have gathered outside because there is a health care town hall meeting, which is expected to begin in just under two hours. we will be covering that, of course. and that town hall meeting is likely to be a lively one, as hundreds of people prepare to ask their questions and voice their opposition about the president's plan to reform the health care system. delia goncalves has a look at the growing debate. >> reporter: seating capacity inside the caplan auditorium is at 5:00, those organizers are expecting many more people to attend the highly controversial town hall. risks you going to senator cardin's meeting tonight. >> reporter: it's all the talk on talk radio. >> it strikes me kind of odd that he wod pick a venue that

only holds 500 people. >> reporter: callers lighting up the lines, fired up about senator cardin's town hall to discuss the president's plan to reform health care. >> it's what the democrats did was they made it too complicated. >> reporter: it's a controversy that has been brewing. not only here in baltimore -- >> they created this rush to try to do something that affects every american in the country and expect the american citizens to sit back and say it's okay? >> reporter: but -- but all around the country. >> people are generally concerned. senator ben cardin doesn't mind the debate. >> express your views. ask the questions you want to ask, including the tough questions. >> reporter: as long as both sides he says keeps it respectful. there are several rallies scheduled before the 7:00 event, but according to towson rules, the protesters are going to have to stay outside. no signs of any kind are allowed inside the auditorium.

campus police and county police will be here, just to keep the peace. and we're told if residents don't stick to their questions and begin to vent or act unruly, organizers are prepared to shut off their mics. in towson, delia goncalves, abc 2 news. >> we'll have a crew there tonight, and tonight's town hall meet willing also be moderated. senator cardin tells us despite the rumors, they are not screening questions beforehand. on the heels of these town hall meetings, some more chaotic than others, president obama will go to new hampshire this week where he will host a town hall meeting of his own, hoping to wipe out any of the rumors. abc 2 news at 5:30. coming up, hear about the new website that hopes to clear up the president's plan. nationwide vaccine testing for the h1n1 virus got underway today at the university of maryland medical center. researchers started with 67 adults. abc 2 news kelly swoope is there. she joins us with details. kel? >> reporter: marybeth, they had

to actually turn people away. today they began vaccinating healthy adults, 18 to 64 years old. and the data they collect will be closely monitored and analyzed. >> it's a viral infection of the upper representstary track. >> reporter: the doctor arms volunteers with the basics of the h1n1 vaccine. participants take part in the first phase of the nationwide vaccine study. and they came for various reasons. >> it's mostly the cause. but the money is a nice side benefit. >> i'm continuing what i started 53 years ago or so by being 234 polio vaccine trials. >> reporter: arthur viring on the was one of the first to get the shots. he believes it is a major health threat. >> the unhealthy were attacked in 1918. protect yourself. >> reporter: more than 200 adults and seniors will receive the vaccine at the university of maryland medical center. >> going to be asking our volunteers to allow us to

obtain blood from them at different time points, and we're going to good ahead and send those to a central nih lab and they're going to look for antibodies to the vaccines. >> reporter: participants will return in 8 days, 21 days and then 42. >> this particular study, we're going to try to answer the question what is the optimal dose of vaccine to be discovered. >> reporter: after ten days of collecting and analyzing data from the adults, researchers will begin the pediatric trials. they'll give the vacation to children six months to 18 years old. >> we would like to make sure that certainly we scientifically have no reason to believe that there is going to be any safety issues. but we want to test that before we go into immediate trick. >> reporter: adults taking the vaccine say the risk of feverish, flu-like symptoms are worth the possible outcome. >> i guess there is always a risk these sort of things. and i think it's minimal and

far outweighed that can could be done by this kind of thing. >> reporter: volunteers will be paid $600 for their participation in the study. many of the people we spoke with say they're taking part in numerous studies. kelly swoope, abc 2 news. police in anne arundel county want your help to find whoever is responsible for an armed robbery in odenton. it happened saturday night around 9:00 in the 1200 block of scotsman nor court. a 22-year-old woman says she was approached by two men. one pointed a handgun and demanded her purse. if you have information call metro crimestoppers. at 1-866-lock-up. it was a long day for police in northeast baltimore and an elderly man. two suspects rob a gas station and run off into a nearby home with a man in his 90s inside. brian kuebler is live at the scene to break it all down for us. brian? it has ended, correct?

>> reporter: it has. police just left the scene about 45 minutes ago. but they're still looking for yet another suspect in a crime that held a 94-year-old man and this entire neighborhood hostage all day long. after five hours of being held hostage in his own home, the 94- year-old victim was freed by police and loaded into a city ambulance. we're told he is doing well, as at least one of the suspects was arrested and currently being booked after orchestrating a more than five- hour spectacle on bel air road in northeast baltimore. >> and the police direct med to come over here, and i got gas. >> what have you seen? >> all the s.w.a.t. teams, the police activity, the helicopter overhead. >> reporter: one of many area residents looking on. police say it started at 9:30 this morning when two men robbed this nearby gas station and pistol-whipped an employee. they then fled down the street and into a home on the 4300

block of mary avenue, where they took the elderly homeowner hostage and kept police at bay. it is unclear if the suspects threatened the elderly man. police spent the day trying to diffuse the situation. but after hours of negotiating, county and city s.w.a.t. teams fired several rounds of gas into the house. >> we knew we had an armed suspect on the inside, and bringing that hostage out safely was the main prioritiment. >> reporter: the 94-year-old was taken to the hospital as a precaution. police say he will be fine. one of the suspects that frayed his nerves is being interviewed by police. and at the very least will be charged with robbery. now again, police are still looking for another suspect in this case. they say both men may also be suspects in some baltimore county robberies as well. reporting live in northeast baltimore, brian kuebler, abc 2 news. >> thanks, brian. today marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly bay

bridge crash. and on this first anniversary, aaa is call on the maryland transportation administration to stop two-way traffic on the bridge and make other safety improvements. the crash happened on sunday on the eastbound span of the bridge. the family of john short says he lost control of his rig trying to avoid a head-on crash with the car driven by 19-year- old candy baldwin which had crossed the center line. short, of wicomico county was killed. workers started repairs on pratt street today causing lanes to be shut down in downtown baltimore. over the next seven months, pratt string from martin luther king to paca street will have only two lanes during 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the hours they'll perform the street's necessary repairs and improvements. however, the street's lanes will not be closed two and four hours after any major event in the downtown area such as a ball game. he willingly went from fab to flab. why this man who was once an

you're watching baltimore's station that works for you. now abc 2 news at 5. >> typhoon morakot is now a tropical storm. its lethal path began in the philippines and then over the weekend on to taiwan where the storm dump upped to 80 inches of rain and buried as many as 600 people under a mountain mudslide. abc 2 news gloria riviera has the latest. >> reporter: one by one, rescuers are trying to save those caught in typhoon morakot's path. the wreckage left behind ruined

roads, cars crushed by debris is making rescue efforts a painfully slow process. this man said "we're running out of milk for the baby. we have no water ." the storm slammed into torn taiwan late friday evening, triggering the worst flooding in 50 years. an entire mountain village was buried in mud. this woman said it was terrible. "i was so worried i would be washed away by the flood." chinese official says the storm moved so quickly, they were taken by surprise. winds reach upped to 74 miles per hour. an estimated one million people have been evacuated, including the guests of this six-story hotel, not a moment too soon. taiwanese officials say at least 1400 people were killed, ones more are missing. the storm is expected to weaken and move north, but millions of people in the region remain on high alert. in japan, another typhoon hit just over 300 miles west of tokyo. at least a dozen people were killed there, and at least ten

more are missing. gloria riviera, abc news, london. now the forecast certified baltimore's most accurate by weather rate, and maryland's most powerful doppler radar. >> to me, this is the first day i actually walked outside and it really felt like an oven. >> and you felt like summer is here. >> exactly. >> only took a couple of months to get here. >> exactly. >> it's going to be around for a little while. not quite this bad. we are going to see a rather warm week ahead. >> okay. >> we're looking at 93 degrees. overnight low is 70 degrees. normals are 87 and 66. so it's really not that much more than where we should be for this time of year. and we're nowhere near the records. they were set some time ago. right now temperatures are at 93 degrees. relative humidity is at 46%. wind is out of the west at 14 miles an hour. out on the bay for tomorrow, there are your conditions. your high and low tide. your wind will be out of the west, 5 to 10 miles per hour.

we're looking at highs, thus far around the state, in the mid to low 90s. for the most part 93. that's officially at the airport. 91 in york. 94 in hagerstown. 92 in dover, delaware, and 91 in easton. that's currently where we are right now is the high temperature of the day. but the heat index, when you factor in that humidity and the dew points, that's where it becomes unbearable. 99 in hagerstown. 97 in winchester, virginia. 100 degrees is what it feels like in baltimore. 103 in easton. it feels like 110 in ocean city. you can expect everybody in the ocean, or at least finding a pool if they're at the each right now. satellite radar composite shows mostly clear skies throughout the day. today that will continue to be the case for us for the next hour or so. then we're going to see a few more clouds moving in. we do have a line of showers. a little bit of thunderstorm activity. right now it's on the other side of the mountains. some of it may make its way into our region. if it does, it won't be until

later on tonight. as we widen that picture, this big clear area down to the south of us, that is the high pressure that is just pumping this warm southerly air. it comes in right off the ocean. that's where we're seeing that heat and humidity coming up into our direction. that will continue to be the case throughout the night and throughout the day tomorrow. tomorrow afternoon, we have a cold front. there you can see a line of showers associated with it. that moves down into our region. and then things will start to cool down, but only slightly. it is going to be a warm week ahead for us. we're not looking at really good drenching widespread rains. we're looking at spotty showers and thunderstorm activity. here is what it looks like as you head into the forecast. throughout the day tomorrow, a couple of showers here and there. same thing as we head into wednesday. more clouds than we've been seeing throughout the next couple days. and then most of the shower activity really stays down to the south of us. we're looking at a hot and relatively dry week ahead. for tonight 75 degrees, warm and muggy. isolated thunderstorms are possible. as we head into tomorrow, 92

now abc 2 news at 5:30. >> welcome to summer time in maryland. we've all been wondering if it would ever get hot this summer. well, it is finally here. good evening, everybody. i'm terry owens. so how long can we expect this hot, hot weather to last? here is meteorologist susan schrack. >> thanks a lot. good evening, everyone. yes, it is lots of soupiness out there as we have hazy, hot and humid weather. in fact, we're under a heat advisory for most of the state. those are the all the counties colored in orange. that's until 8:00 tonight. the colors to the north of us

in pennsylvania, they're under a severe thunderstorm watch. that has not made its way into our region, though. temperatures right now are in the mid to lower 90s for the most part. but when you factor in that humidity, it pumps it up so that we're feeling like 98 degrees in towson. 97 in fallston. it feels like 100 degrees in havre de grace, and 104 in rock hall. that's where it becomes dangerous, because it feels so hot and you have the humidity and it becomes difficult to breathe. for tonight we're going to be seeing warm, muggy conditions, 75 degrees for an overnight low. it's going to stay warm, and isolated showers are possible. they're more likely along the mason dixon line, more likely in the northeastern part of the state. i'll tell you how long this is going to be lasting, in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you. reward has gone up for information leading to an arrest in last month's deadly liquor store robbery in baltimore county. that reward has now been raised to $4,000. abc 2 news linda so reports family and ie
